It will let you browse FTP sites, download files, or find them using an archie server. It is (IMO) the easiest way for users with MacTCP to fetch a file with a partially known name or to browse around the anonymous FTP archives. It includes a menu listing all the Archie servers, as well as FTP bookmarks for all the popular Macintosh FTP sites (including around 40 mirrors to Umich and Info-Mac). And as an added bonus, its Apple Scriptable and Recordable, and the scripting allows you to fetch and store files to/from FTP sites, so you can automate all sorts of routine FTP tasks. If you have Frontier, it supports Menu Sharing as well (and comes with a bunch of stuff from Leonard Rosenthol to get you started). And for all you die-hard XferIt fans, it supports the Drag Manager to allow you to drag files direct to/from Finder folders. Changes since v1.1.3 are: Nonymous FTP support (ie, with username/password) Drag Manager support Transcript Window Active Log window Search commands Cleaned up the UI Pipelined FTP requests Anarchie requires System 7, MacTCP, and is $10 shareware. The inspiration came to me after reviewing the stack of a similar nature by Peter Jorgenson. InfoBrowser can read in text versions of Info-Mac Digest files. After reading them in it displays them in a fairly easy to use format that allows rapid browsing, and the extracting of information including files to be downloaded. I have fixed a couple of bugs from 2.8 and added some minor functionality to the Download Card. I have made it easier to extract file info into a format that is appropriate for e-mail retrieval of archived files. I find this HC stack very useful and it helps speed up the process of reading the lengthy Info-Mac Digest This requires HC 2.0, works most efficiently on 12" or larger monitors. Full documentation is included and technical support is free. Jon's Commands are free for non-commercial use. If you wish to use them in a commercial package, please contact me for a cheap licence. Version 1.1.2 fixes a specific problem with an interaction between Jon's Commands and the Run Script osax. Specifically, my coercion from text to file specification would cause the command "run script in " to fail because Run Script would try to run the file first and fail. Now it will work as Run Script expects, with most strings failing the coercion instead of pointing to non-existant files. Jon's Commands includes these commands: deleteFile - delete a file or files renameFile - rename a file moveFile - move a file or files to a different folder copyFile - copy a file or list of files sound volume - get the volume setting set sound volume to - set the volume setting clipboard info - get a list of data on the clipboard set the clipboard to - put data on the clipboard the clipboard - get data from the clipboard execute FKEY - run an FKEY resource screen list - describe the monitor configuration finder selection - return the Finder's selection keys pressed - get a list of pressed keys machine environment - get info about the machine play sound - play sound resources, files and descriptors run script resource - run a 'Scpt' or 'scpt' resource free memory - return the free memory available the ticks - return the current value of tickCount walk folders - walk folders and run a script on each file Jon's Commands includes these objects: picture - for getting them off the clipboard <> sound - for getting them off the clipboard & playing them <> screen info - for describing the monitors environment info - for describing the machine Jon's Commands includes these coercions: string to file specification - 'TEXT' to 'fss ' styled text to file specification - 'STXT' to 'fss ' international text to file specification - 'itxt' to 'fss ' Share and enjoy. If you think it is appropriate, please make this available and delete any old versions of MacMiNT. Thanks, Brad from readme -- MacMiNT is a port of MiNT from the Atari ST to the Macintosh. MiNT is an enhanced version of the Atari OS TOS that supports many UNIX-like features. Many free programs available on the net (GCC, tcsh, make, etc.) have been ported to MiNT. MacMiNT can run nearly everything that MiNT can. This software still has bugs though, so USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK! MacMiNT is not officially supported by anybody, so it is not appropriate as a basis for commercial work. Because it exploits many of the low-level parts of the 680x0 CPU and the MacOS, it may not work with future versions (> 7.1) of MacOS. I have run MacMiNT on Macs ranging from the Portable to the Quadra to the PowerMacs. Please let me know if it doesn't work on your machine. It does not work with virtual memory turned on. It does not get much testing under 68000 based Macs or under System 6 so it is more likely to fail on such systems. It might run on a Mac with 2M RAM, but it needs 8M if you want to run programs like GCC. The minimal installation of MacMiNT requires about 3M of free disk space, but you will need more like 15M to use MacMiNT as a development environment. I posted the following sometime last month: "For some reason, my ClarisWorks word processor no longer will allow me to open documents created in different word processor types, nor 'Save As' anything but Claris. A little snooping around all the ClarisWorks application files I have floating around on the hard drive revealed a generic icon in the file named "Claris XTND System" in the System folder tucked inside the "Claris" folder. I've tried several different things, including: (1) rebuilding the desktop (no effect) (2) re-installing the original software (pretty tough when you have a Performa, and the only disks you get are the "Disk Tools" disk ... but I did back up my hard drive - ! Alas ... no luck). (3) call technical support. (Called them twice. The first person suggested sending in $10.00 for the original disks, while the second one offered to send them for free; I quickly accepted.) The new disks were no help, however. (4) Called tech. support again, they sent out another set of disks, and suggested it might be an extension problem. Killed off my extensions, and the Claris XTND System icon went back to normal ... that time. Now I have the same problem, and killing off my extensions is NOT helping! What to do (yes, I did try all of the above, except calling technical support)?? Please send any and all replies to me at my e-mail address: GLEN_Warner@macbbs.com I will post the results as I have difficulty getting Info-Mac (*sigh*). Thanks!" While the number of replies were few (2), I did promise to post the results, so ... here they are: John Whistler (john_w%vulcan@mentec.ie) reported a somewhat similar problem when he attempted to do a little system housecleaning, by dumping "Foreign File Access" from his Extensions folder. Shortly after that, he was unable to restore individual files from Apple Backup. David Low (david.low@ac.hillsdale.edu) offered several suggestions, including checking the XTND file for an incorrectly set bundle bit (I checked it with a demo of Resourcerer 1.2.1, and it was set). He also suggested checking for other 'home made' items with the same creator ('CLRS') somewhere on my hard drive (he assumed I was a REAL programmer, instead of the FUTURE BASIC, lesson 4 dabbler that I am ...:-)). He also suggests the possibility of a damaged Desktop file. If this is the case, he says, rebuilding the Desktop will not help at all. This is a strong possibility, although MacCheck, Disk First Aid 7.2, and Norton Utilities all say everything is fine. He offered to send me a copy of Desktop Reset to take care of this possibility, although he is not sure how to send files through e-mail. I will send an explanation of the method to him soonest. After a lenghthy search, I did find Desktop Reset ... it didn't do the trick. The price was $579 at ComputerWare. The quality of text is almost as good as a StyleWriter I or II, but not quite. Using 25% cotton bond seems to help as it does with the previous models. The color quality is excellent. Software includes ColorSync from Apple, with data for all Apple monitors and for the color StyleWriter. This means that what you see on the screen is reproduced on paper, with the proviso that some colors can never be printed on any color printer. PageMaker 5.0a and Illustrator 5.0.1 files print with full resolution, even though the printer does not have (or need) PostScript. Printing a PhotoShop 2.5.1 file that is full page takes about 10 minutes. Speed of printing normal documents is reasonable. Draft mode, which is quite good, although a little light, takes about 15 seconds per page, best mode takes about 45 seconds per page. Spot color takes a little longer. Envelope printing is extremely easy and the output is excellent. 15 envelopes can be loaded at once. Normal letter size paper can be loaded 100 sheets at a time. Question: Recently I was reading again an article by Bruce Schneier in Macworld February 1994, about encryption in which the author was testing various ways to encrypt datas and also lock the access to a hard disk. The author said he was able to defeat most protection, except when DES was used. Even then he was able sometimes to open the files. I know that with Compact Pro it is possible to compact and encrypt at the same time. On the other side, you can examine the content of the archive. Anyway how safe are the various encryptors? Answer: NOT VERY when proprietary encryption engine is used. Better when DES is used. Also MacPgp is highly recommended. "If you're interested in a _nearly_ unbreakable encryption application, do an archie search for MacPGP, a public key encryption utility. The author is being pursued by the Government for releasing the technology on the 'net. " Latest version is macpgp 2.3.cpt.hqx ftp theta.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp location pub1/security/tools ftp rena.dit.co.jp location pub/security/tools Question: With a powerful computer is-it not possible to try various keys, letting the program run as long as possible? Answer: YES but it can be rather long. See the documentation coming with the program Enigma which is in the Info-Mac archives. Even if you do not use the free basic program, the documentation is great about that topic. A shareware version for 15$ gives you an even better protection. Question: Also it it not possible for those outside Canada and USA to buy programs in which DES is used. Is-it not ridiculous since a true spy could simply buy the program in USA or Canada and ship it home or copy it on a blank disk? Answer: Right now, it is forbidden to post MacPgp on a BBS in the USA. You can get MacPGP outside of the country (Japan, Italy, Sweden). Question: Can you loose datas using encryption program? Answer: A user reported problem with Stuffit Lite as you can see, but myself using either Compact Pro 1.34 and Stuffit Lite 3.0.7, I never had any. "I used to use the encryption facility of StuffIt Lite 3.0.7 (on this hot-rod accelerated SE in my office) and StuffIt Deluxe 3.0.5 (at home on my Quadra 700) to encrypt math exam questions and answers. On several occasions copies of the encrypted stuffed file got corrupted and could not be decrypted (no, I had _NOT_ forgotten the passwords!). On all but one of these occasions I had other copies that were still healthy. As a piece of hardware, my el cheapo Zoom modem was excellent, and the USR Robotics Sportster 14.4 modem I use many hours a day seems to be every bit as reliable as the Global Village modem I installed in my wife's PowerBook. However, both the Zoom and the USR modems are ugly, so if external beauty matters to you, think of something else. As for the software, Global Village's modems come with their proprietary fax software, which is indeed excellent in the interface department. But does it actually perform any better than Delrina FaxPro, which is what I use now (after giving up on FaxSTF)? I don't think so. On the contrary, my impression is that FaxPro's OCR works better than the Global Village OCR software on the wife's PB. I did NOT buy FaxPro for the price, btw: upgrading to FaxSTF 3.0 would have been cheaper. Telecom software for data transfer is pretty crummy with most of these modems. The best come with Microphone Lite, which is serviceable. But if you do any serious online work, I would recommend upgrading to SITcomm a.s.a.p. Ethernet is not a requirement. Given those specs, the Apple Select 360 looked pretty good from a price-performance standpoint ($1479 at my local dealer.) But when I tried it out there, although the printing was as crisp as the Pro 630, each paper-feed cycle was noisy at the start and the paper emerged with a definite upward curl on the top 3/4 inch. After 24 hours the curl, though less severe, was still noticeable. I asked the dealer to feed an envelope, but he expressed ignorance/inability. My concern was that if the paper path had very small radii that envelopes would jam. And I don't think I want curled output. What is your experience with the Apple Select 360? Am I seeing a design defect or was the printer in the store misadjusted? If the latter, is it a misadjustment that the printer is prone to suffer? Or is curling the top of the paper just a feature. I've been writing up some 'read me' files for my new external commands, and I've been using SimpleText v1.0 which came with System Update 3. It has become apparent that the update, while providing some nice features, has a couple of noticable flaws and bugs: 1. Typing in SimpleText slows down to molasses speed when you have more than about a page of text inserted. I guess this is because it's continuously updating the style information. Even so, it lags a LONG way behind my typing, and I'm on an LC475. If they had used a custom text setup rather than TextEdit they could solve have avoided this problem as well as allowed files over 32k to be opened. Maybe for a future version? 2. If you cut, paste, or delete some text when you're below the top position of the scroll bar, SimpleText almost always loses track of where the "top" is. That is, you can scroll to the top of the scroll bar but not actually be at the top of the document. To get to the document's top I have to select some text and move the mouse up to have the window auto-scroll up. Hardly a professional solution. It's a shame that there are these few problems, because some of the new features are really nice. It's great to have styled text, and the speech commands are welcome (although they were already in an AV version of TeachText). You still can't paste in pictures, though: I guess you still have to do that option-space thing and put them in as resources. Interestingly, opening the 'about' window increments the number for an untitled window. So, if you open and close the 'about' window three times and then make a new document, the new document will be 'untitled 4'.
